Partnerships for Flood-Tolerant Communities in the Mekong Delta
Cities have been built on Deltas all over the world. Along with Dr Nga Nguyen and her PhD project, Partnerships for Flood-Tolerant Communities in the Mekong Delta a group of landscape architects and design researchers explore impacts of an era of climate change and subsequent social change in one of the most vulnerable communities in the largest city in the Mekong Delta.

A multi-disciplinary design team researched deltaic cities in transition, zooming in on the largest Mekong Delta city of its kind Can Tho City, Vietnam. After 6 months of research, aeriel mapping and zoom calls a number of design pitches were developed.
Monica Daley designs a proposition for a co-created children's play space subject to seasonal flooding in Can Tho City, Vietnam. She took her ideas to the Mekong Delta with Dr Gillian Lawson to work with Dr Nga Nguyen and her Vietnamese students from the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Ming City in November 2015.
Two weeks of immersive community workshops resulted in a number of independent and new design solutions being developed in region with co-design at their centre. Whilst children’s wellbeing was important floating waste mitigation strategies, interior acoustic panelling and a public/private city masterplan was instead prioritised to combat key immediate challenges for the community on the water’s edge.
Dr Nga Nguyen continues her work in the field and within the Mekong Delta region.
